Grand Rapids Symphony presents Chopin & Dvořák

Adam Schoenberg Canto
Chopin Piano Concerto No. 1
Dvořák Symphony No. 8

Marcelo Lehninger Conductor  | Rafał Blechacz Piano - 2014 Gilmore Artist

‘Canto’ as a verb, translated from the Italian, can mean:, “I sing” and these concerts are full of one beautiful melodic invention after another. You may not yet know the work of the young American composer Adam Schoenberg (no relation to the forbidding Arnold!) but after these concerts you might just join his legions of fans across America and beyond. Possessed of a considerable lyrical gift, Schoenberg is one of the most sought after thirty-somethings of today. The composer has written this work to honor the birth of his first child, Luca, to whom Schoenberg is writing lullabies on a nearly daily basis.

Chopin possesses a waterfall of never-ending melodies written for his chosen instrument, the piano. In the first of his two piano concertos, we are treated to what seems an endless cascade of melodies both stirring and wistful. To conclude, we have the sunniest Dvorak symphony of all, No. 8 in G major. Coming after his stormy Seventh Symphony in D minor, this work from 1889 was written in thanks for being elected to the prestigious Bohemian Academy of Science, Literature and The Arts, similar to getting the Kennedy Center Honors here at home.
