The latest Pollstar magazine was recently released and included its third quarter rankings for venues across the United States and worldwide. The concert tour industry’s leading trade publication, Pollstar puts lists together in order of year-to-date ticket sales for venues of all sizes, from amphitheatres and small clubs to performance halls and large arenas. These latest rankings reflect just how busy the SMG-managed venues in Grand Rapids, MI have been this year.
The list of the Top 200 Arena Venues of all sizes worldwide includes Van Andel Arena, which has sold over 114,000 tickets to its various events through September 30th of this year. The SMG-managed arena ranks as the 43rd busiest in the United States and 81st busiest worldwide, and has sold more tickets than several larger arenas around the country. Concerts from musical artists, such as Kid Rock, Luke Bryan, Maroon 5, Bob Seger and more, as well as family shows and sporting events, such as The Harlem Globetrotters, WWE and Professional Bull Riders, have filled seats and entertained a wide audience.
DeVos Performance Hall, also managed by SMG, ranked in the Top 100 Theatre Venues chart. With over 44,000 tickets sold so far this year, DeVos Performance Hall ranks as the 67th busiest theatre venue in the United States and 88th busiest worldwide. In addition to several shows from local fine arts groups, fans have been delighted by appearances and performances from the likes of musicians Gordon Lightfoot and Tommy Emmanuel, comedians Daniel Tosh, Lewis Black and Brian Regan, Theresa Caputo, David Sedaris and more.
“We’re excited to be recognized on these lists and rated among some of the best venues in the world. Some great shows came through early in the year, and we’re happy to continue carrying that momentum as we head into another busy stretch,” said Richard MacKeigan, SMG’s Regional General Manager for Van Andel Arena and DeVos Place®. “The SMG staff has been working very hard to deliver a world-class experience at our venues, and it is wonderful to see our community as enthusiastic as we are about live entertainment. We’re very thankful to have worked with some outstanding promoters and look forward to continue entertaining this great city.”
Both venues will remain busy for the remainder of the year as well. Van Andel Arena has several upcoming concerts, including shows from Josh Groban and Chris Tomlin in October, John Mayer in November, and two performances from Trans-Siberian Orchestra in December. The family friendly Sesame Street Live will also appear in November for a five-show run. Along with the fine arts shows, including Opera Grand Rapids’ presentation of “A Streetcar Named Desire” in early November, DeVos Performance Hall will welcome The Temptations in October, as well as In the Mood: A 1940s Musical Revue, comedian Gabriel Iglesias, fun-humored a capella group Straight No Chaser, and the southern gothic, supernatural musical, “Ghost Brothers of Darkland County,” written by Stephen King and John Mellencamp, in November.
